Overview
In order to print to the Sidney-Pacific printers from your computer
you need to install a few pieces of software and configure the printers
first. This page describes how to do so. Once you have completed the
steps here, return to the Printing Guide
and follow the instructions on how to print.
The printer queue names for all cases below: SIDNEY and PACIFIC are
the black-and-white printers, and WAVERLY is the color printer.
Please follow all the instructions below. Just installing the
software packages will not work. You need to follow exactly the steps
below.
Installing on Windows
First, install the software (do not install any printers
with KLP yet):
- Install Kerberos for Windows. The download can
be obtained
by clicking here.
- Install Kerberized Line Printing for Windows (KLP). The
download can be obtained
by clicking here. Read the
installation instructions.
Next, install the printers. The following instructions will need to be
repeated for each printer.
- Choose which printer you want to install: SIDNEY, PACIFIC,
or WAVERLY.
- Download updated printer drivers from HP. The drivers that come
with Windows 2000 or Windows XP are obsolete, contain bugs, and will not work
properly. Choose the right PostScript (PS) driver for the printer you are installing:
- HP LaserJet 8150dn PS (SIDNEY and PACIFIC).
- HP Color LaserJet 4600dn PostScript (WAVERLY).
- Unpack the driver files by opening them. We recommend you
let the installer unpack the files into the default directory.
Remember the directory where you unpacked the files.
- Add printer.
How to do this is described in the
installation instructions from the previous step.
- For simplicity, we recommend you give the printer the same name
as its Athena queue name (e.g. SIDNEY).
- Make sure you tick "enable Hesiod lookup".
- Use the printer name from step 3 as the queue name.
- When the installation wizard ask for a driver, click on Have Disk,
and point to the directory where you unpacked the files.
The next steps will enable double-sided printing if it is not already enabled
(you should do this, in order to save paper, trees, and space in your folders!):
- Go to (Start->Control Panel->Printers and Faxes),
right click on the S-P printer you just installed and select Properties.
- Go to Device Settings, and scroll down to Installable
Options. From there select Duplex Unit: Installed.
- Now you should be able to print duplex. To do it, in any Print
dialog box click on Properties, and select Print on Both Sides->Flip on Long Edge.
- You can delete the files you unpacked in Step 4 now. Return
to the Printing Guide and follow the instructions
there on how to print.
Installing on Mac OS (except OS X)
Install the software:
- Install
Kerberos for Macintosh.
- Install
Kerberized Line Printing.
- Set-up the S-P printers, as described in
this document.
- Return
to the Printing Guide and follow the instructions
there on how to print.
Note that Mac OS 9 and lower is no longer supported by MIT. We recommend
you upgrade to Mac OS X.
Installing on Mac OS X
You will need at least version 10.3 (Panther). (If you have
a versions of Mac OS lower than 10.3 and higher than OS 9
your only option is this
workaround.)
- Install Kerberos Extras from
web.mit.edu/software/mac.html.
- Follow the installation instructions at http://web.mit.edu/klpr-osx/www/.
- Return
to the Printing Guide and follow the instructions
there on how to print.
